When considering a used Porsche for sale, the buyer should be wary of these items: 1. Originality...has the car been unprofessionally modified in such a way that adversely effects handling or performance? Does the exterior color and interior trim duplicate factory offered combinations? 2. Mechanical Condition..are all major components i.e. engine, transmission, drivetrain, front end, brakes serviceable? A car with components in need of work would not automatically disqualify it, but cost of repairs should be factored in to negotiated selling price. 3. Bodywork and Rust...has the car been in a severe accident to the point where major body components such as unibody and undercarriage have been straightened or incorrectly repaired ? What is the condition of door panels, fenders, quarter panels etc. ? While some amount of rust or body repair can be anticipated on older cars, stay away from cars that have had extensive, poorly done repairs or are total rustbuckets ! Cars that have spent their lives in dry climates such as the American Southwest are often found as original examples with little rust. The Porsche 356 Carrera (with a special racing engine), "Super 90" and "Speedster" models are among the most desirable versions; 356 Carrera models often sell for well over US$150,000. The original selling price of a late 1950s Porsche was nearly $4,000, the price of a Cadillac. While the 356 changed over time with various mechanical refinements, the basic shape remained the same and was instantly recognizable year to year. Coupe and cabriolet models were produced every year up to 1965, with the last 356B Roadster built in early 1963. The final model, the 356C, featured disc brakes and the most powerful pushrod engine Porsche ever produced: the 95 hp "SC". 356 production peaked at 14,151 cars in 1964, the year that the new 911 model went on the market, and the last 356 was made in 1965. The famous, distinctive and durable car has undergone continuous development since its introduction in 1964. Mechanically it is notable for being rear engined and, until the introduction of the all-new Type 996 in 1999, air-cooled. All 911s use six-cylinder boxer engines. Since its inception the 911 has been modified, both by private teams and the factory itself, for racing, rallying and other types of automotive competition. It is often cited as the most successful competition car ever, especially when its later versions are included, mainly the powerful Porsche 935 Turbo. In the international poll for the award of the world's most influential car of the twentieth century the 911 came fifth after the Ford Model T, the Mini, the Citroën DS and the Volkswagen Beetle.
